You missed it.
Sorry. The time for that blog has come and gone.
In the meantime, I leave you with this poster, which you can find around campus. I meant it as a peace offering.
Tear it up, take it, save it, throw it away, whatever.
Moving the deer is a victory for some, but to my mind mostly a great way of protecting the community from its own worst
habits. Like taking a band saw away from a four year old. Necessary. Too bad, it
was an important tool. Way too dangerous for DePauw students and faculty. As I told my class, I felt
we should have left it up there, until it was a wire skeleton, a picked over carcass of wire and composite. Then on
graduation day, as your families walked by,when they asked about the remains on the frame-- "What's that?" You
could say "They called it art. But a lot of people didn't like it. So some people, we'll never know who,
took care of it." And when families expressed shock, the first words you could say were the first words
of every e-mail I received this week:
"Don't blame me! I don't condone vandalism."
Now, maybe it will be a lobby ornament. Frankly, I think the mob succeeded in making it as irrelevant
as the the haters wanted it to be.
In any case, be certain of this. I'm clearly as big a jerk as they come. I never said I wasn't.
But I do expect more. Feel free to put that back on me. You can always expect more from me.
If you want a copy of the poster, let me know.
